Introduction to the Asian Cat Breed

Treacle, one of our Asian cats

Asian cats have a modern history compared to the Mau, but just as romantic. A chinchilla male, Jemari Sanquist and female lilac Burmese, Bambino Lilac Faberge, had grown up together in the same household. But when she showed signs of coming into call, Baroness Miranda Von Kirchberg shut her Burmese in her study until the time was right to take her to her designated husband to be. Completely lovelorn, the two called to each other through the door, until, fortunately for us, the cleaner opened the door and allowed them to be reunited. The resulting kittens were beautiful and were nicknamed 'Burmillas'. The first generation Burmillas were mated back to Burmese which gave rise to several different types of Burmilla related cat.

The 'Asian Group' was used to apply to all the genetic possibilities. This includes not just Burmillas, but also the self shorthair including the Bombay, the longhair version or Tiffanie, the smoke, and four varieties of Asian tabby - Spotted, Classic, Mackerel and Ticked. For the full standard of points and breed description, I would recommend you visit the GCCF or Asian Cat Association websites.

Making new friends

The Asian group is continuing to grow in popularity, probably due to their wonderful character and that they come in hundreds of colours! They are quite muscular, but very elegant, with sleek lustrous coats and large eyes. All the Asian cats I have had the pleasure of meeting have strong personalities.

Treacle, a loving family cat

They are very outgoing and inquisitive cats, but are also gentle and loving. They have a real charm about them. However, in my experience, they would rather you waited for them to come to you for a cuddle. They form strong bonds with their owners, and again in my experience, are quite dog like in that they want to be where you are, even if it means having to sit at the sink while you brush your teeth or do the washing up. I forget the number of times I have been washing my hair when a cat has fallen into the bath as well!!
